Pianocean comes to the Isle of Rum - July 2021

21-07-2021

On Sunday 18th July, the Isle of Rum was treated to the magical sounds of Pianocean at the Old Pier. Islanders, yachtie, campers and all types of visitors to the island swarmed in to hear the beautiful voice and playing of Marieke Huysmans Berthou as she played her piano on the back of her boat.

Pianocean travels from port to port to give concerts from their boat which transforms into their very own stage when the piano is lifted from the back cabin to the deck by a mechanical system. This season Pianocean have been sailing through the Hebrides, giving concerts as they go from island to island. The Small Isles have been lucky enough to catch their attention and all 4 islands have been treated to a visit and concert.

With plenty of noise made by the Isle of Rum’s Visitor Service Manager Alex before the event, the island saw its population more than double on Sunday. On the day there was a BBQ provided by the fantastic Kim’s Kitchen with everything from Lobster to Venison to veggie specials available. Drinks were available on the Old Pier by the Isle of Rum shop, as well as plenty of seating too.

At 12pm the events kicked off with the firing up of the BBQ and a warmup act by Rum’s very own Pier Master Dave Beaton as he sang and played his guitar. Just after 1pm Pianocean welcomed the 80 people who had come to the event. All were emersed in an hour of beautiful folk music sang in both English and French and were even the first to hear Pianocean’s new song about the Small Isles.

Overall, it was a fantastic day which will set the trend of events at the Old Pier on Rum. Keep an eye out more events coming to the Isle of Rum soon!
